The Main Rest Camp In The Addo Elephant National Park; In The Main Game Viewing Area
Addo's Premier Rest CampThis rest camp is situated in the main section of the Addo Elephant National Park and is the only public camp within the main section. The Addo Main Camp is situated, after you have entered the main gate, on the R342 about 15km from the Eastern Cape town of Patterson. The camp itself is beautiful with many species of birds and small mammals always present. The camp has a bird hide and a floodlit water hole with a picnic spot where you can watch the wildlife come to drink. Accommodation in Addo's main camp is very good and it makes your safari in this South African National Park extra special. The camp gates times change regularly, depending on the season. There is an a la carte restaurant in the camp. Nyathi WaterholeIf you have got spare time book yourself on a night drive and enjoy the African bush during it's most active hours. During a night drive you can observe many of Addo's smaller creatures. Genets, Polecats, Jackals, Owls and even Lions can be seen on these Addo Elephant National Park night drives. If you are not up to it you could always sit at the floodlit Nyathi (Zulu word for Buffalo) Waterhole and see all types of animals. Addo's animals you are most likely to see here at night include: Black Backed Jackal Greater Kudu Scrub Hare Spotted Thick Knee Black Headed Heron However African Lion, Spotted Hyaena, Cape Grysbok, Bushbuck, Small Spotted Genet and Bat-Eared Fox are also seen here. Addo Elephant National Park's Rest Camp Bird HideIn the rest camp there is a lovely bird hide. If you are ever sitting around in camp and you are bored, take a walk to the hide and sit there for a while. Birds like Weavers, Bishops, Lapwings, Ibis, Moorhen, Coot and many other bird species may be observed here. Marsh/Helmeted Terrapin can also be seen in the water below and Mongoose and Suricate (Meerkat) occasionally pay the hide a visit too. See Addo's birding page...
