Birds Of Southern Africa
There are many
great places to view the 920+ different array of birds in
South Africa. All of these birds have their own eye catching
features, whether it is the birds plumage or habit, the birds of
South Africa are all special in their own way, yes, including the
Feral Pigeons and Sparrows.
Birding
hotspots in Southern Africa that I have personally been to or heard
about are;
Kruger National Park, Kalahari, Okavango Delta,
Addo
Elephant National Park, Karoo National Park and Karoo surroundings,
Millstream Farm (a 400 hectare trout farm close to Belfast and
Machachadorp), the Drakensburg, Lesotho,
Kenton-On-Sea (a coastal
town 1 hour away from Port Elizabeth), St. Lucia Estuary, Phinda
Private Game Reserve, Ndumo River Lodge as well as many other
reserves, farms or guesthouses that all support different species of
Southern African birds.
If you
are a visitor to Johannesburg or Pretoria, South Africa a good place
to view indigenous and exotic birds in the area is the Monte Casino
Bird Park. This fascinating place is home to many rare and more
common birds of South Africa and other parts of the world. You can
even walk through large enclosures filled with colourful and
dazzling birds and get so close to them you can almost touch them.
Summer
is the best time for birding or bird watching or to take a bird
safari in South Africa, especially in the
Kruger National Park. The
Kruger National Park has well over 500 different birds which occur
naturally. Winter is not too bad either with a large amount of birds
staying in Southern Africa for the winter season.
South Africa
is home to many bird species that are beautiful but rare or
endangered and should you see the following birds count yourself
fortunate;
There are
other rare and endangered birds in and around South and Southern Africa, so when
you are bird watching in the amazing country we call South Africa,
keep your eyes open! |
