The Black Rhino, like the White Rhino, suffered a lot from poaching and at one stage there were only about 180 left in the wild in the whole of South Africa. A stronghold of the Black Rhino was Hluhluwe-Umfolozi Game Reserve and in the years as the Black Rhino started to make a comeback this reserve supplied Black Rhino to the Kruger National Park, where in years before the Black Rhino had been poached to extinction in the park.
The Black Rhino are very shy, and are solitary creatures unless there are mothers with their young. There are a few subspecies of the Black Rhino, and their distribution in South Africa is patchy with the highest densities of the Black Rhino occurring in the Kruger National Park and in the province of Kwazulu Natal.
Black Rhino are smaller than White Rhino and are very agile for their size. The Black Rhino can achieve a speed of 45km\h. They are very dangerous when approached on foot.
