All You Need To Know About South Africa's Fish And Angling For Them

There are so many types of fish species and types of fishing techniques and angling options in South Africa. And South Africa is a wonderfully diverse place when it comes to fishing, numbers of fish, fish species and bodies of water. There are over 320 common sea fish that occur around the South African coast line and over 145 common inland or freshwater fish too. I personally love fishing and have fished many different types of angling, whether it is in the sea or a river or a dam or a weir. Saltwater and freshwater fishing is great fun, especially if you know what you are doing. This website is running a long term project, which is trying to catch and photograph as many species of Southern African fish as possible. You can see our progress by looking at the logs and record sections. South Africa boasts so many fish species and it will be a joy to show you as many photos of them as possible. It won't be easy but we will do our best!

More About South African Angling

I have always been fascinated by fish and fishing. My favourite types of fishing include fly fishing and bait fishing with fixed spool or multiplier reels. I find these 2 types of angling methods the most challenging. There are many challenging areas to look for and catch fish such as estuaries, rivers, dams, lakes, rocky areas, gullies, in the surfzone, tidal pools, weirs, rock pools, the intertidal zone, on the backline, and in the deepest parts of the ocean!

Fish are fascinating creatures and no matter where they occur (Fresh or Salt Water) they always pull off something special.

Fishing is a great way to enjoy South Africa's natural surroundings and angling can be a conservation operation. The most important thing is that we have to protect all fish species in South Africa and we have to make this our mission, or else it will not be done. There are quite a few ways to make money from fish species and angling. Run hatcheries or fish farms, introduce fish into a man made dam and charge people to fish, teach people how to fish or teach fish biology, run fishing tour programs, hold angling seminars, aquaculture, deep sea fishing trips etc. But our most important job is to abide by the fishing rules and laws and release as many fish safely back into the water as we can!

Fishing is great and the entire 'spectrum' of fish species in South Africa is a huge asset, enjoy fishing and let us know where you fish!
