South African Fish

The Beautiful Cape Stumpnose Fish...

South Africa's Cape Stumpnose fish is an amazing looking specimen. Rhabdosrgus holubi is it's scientific name and it gets it's common name from the place it was discovered and the shape of it's nose, very stout. This is personally one of my favourite South African saltwater fish species and it is a joy to look at and to catch (On light tackle).

This species of Stumpnose fish is a deep bodied and oval shaped, with a yellow line running down the middle of it's silver-coloured body. This is the smallest species of Stumpnose that occurs in the offshore coastal waters of South Africa and it relies on estuaries too. It is endemic to the Southern African seas and ocean and it can reach a length of about 40 cm. The South African angling record for this species is just over 2 kilograms.

Cape Stumpnose are a very good eating fish and they are too small to be exploited by commercial fisherman. The future is bright as long as we can keep our estuaries in good condition. The fry and juvenile Cape Stumpnose depend heavily on these saltwater and freshwater estuaries for survival. I have caught the Cape Stumpnose in both fresh and salt water... To see my records of this fish please visit the following 2 pages. Freshwater fish records; salt water fish records. Pictures of this beautiful fish are below, enjoy!

How To Catch The South African Cape Stumpnose

Over the years I have been fishing for the Cape Stumpnose I have found that Bait Fishing is the most successful. Using spoons and the Dropshot fishing methods (Camo worm is good!) can also produce good results. But back to the bait fishing... Chokka (Squid), Shrimp, Prawn and any type of sea-dwelling worm produces great results with the Cape Stumpnose and you should be busy for hours bringing these amazing little fish in...
