South African Fish And Fishing

The Majestic Kwelera River East London South Africa

Kwelera River: Home Of The Trophy Spotted Grunter!

The Kwelera River is a very beautiful untouched estuarine system that holds some very big Kob and Spotted Grunter. The Kwelera River is situated a few kilometers outside East London in the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa. This river is very diverse and recently a new species of Flying Fish was discovered in the waters of the Kwelera (Pronounced Kwelega). The Lesser Sandshark is plentiful in the river mouth and a fair way into the river system of the Kwelera. They can often be a nuisance for the fisherman and anglers who target the big Grunter that inhabit the waters close to the river mouth. Fishing is very good here and you can expect tom catch Kob, Cape Stumpnose, White Steenbras, Spotted Grunter, Garrick, Shad and Blacktail.

I have personally seen some huge Grunter coming out of this river. Pink prawn seems to be their favoured bait, but chokka and mud prawn work as well.

The birdlife is prolific amongst the dense riverine vegetation and many different species of rare birds can be seen here. The Bushbuck and Cape Clawless Otter should be looked for here as they are quite common. There are all sorts of insects and arachnid species to be seen as well. All in all the Kwelera River is a fascinating place with many wonders to behold and it has some very good fishing locations; as an angler you will never get bored on the banks of the Kwelera River!
