What You Need To Know About The Lesser Sandshark

The Lesser Sandshark is a common flatfish that occurs throughout South Africa's coastal waters and is also referred to as the Lesser Sandy or the Lesser Guitarfish. This South African fish species is the most common of three Sandshark species found in South Africa. This species of Sand Shark is in the middle, in terms of weight between the 3 species of Guitarfish... They can attain 120 centimeters and reach up to weights of 30 kilograms. The name Guitarfish was derived from the shape of this species of shark.

The Lesser Sand Shark occurs in river mouths, estuaries and in the surf zone and irregularly venture out into the depths of the ocean (Up to about 60 meters) where they are occasionally caught by Trawlers.. They enjoy areas with sand banks and drop offs. These Sandy's are regarded as poor fighters, however when you are fighting one on relatively light tackle against the current, they prove to be worthy competitors!

The Lesser Sand Shark's colouration and patterns help camouflage it from predators like sharks. Lesser Guitarfish are often preyed upon by sharks (Especially Ragged Tooth Sharks) and they are very important in a sharks diet. This Guitarfish sometimes burrows itself into the sand as a way of ambushing its favourite food items; Crabs, Sea Lice (Mole Crabs) and fish. The Lesser Sandshark crushes it's prey with it's teeth and then devours it.

How To Catch South Africa's Lesser Sandshark (Guitarfish)

The Lesser Sand Shark can be caught using a variety of angling methods and baits. You can fish light with a 8 foot rod and 10 pound line or you can fish heavy with a 12 foot rod and 30 pound line, the choice is really yours! I love catching the Lesser Guitarfish, I get such a rush, as this was the first ever fish species I caught off the beach using rock and surf tackle. You can bait up your rod with a 3/0 hook (Nothing smaller) and some fresh sardine, this has done the trick for me every time. Although this is true, combinations of Chokka (Squid), Octopus, Mackerel, Bonito, Shad and Crustaceans will also do the job! Live baits work well too and I have had success on Pinky, Shad and Blacktail. The Dropshot even works! Camo/Blood Worm, Squid and 5-7 inch minnows do the job! Good luck in your future tussles with the splendid Lesser Guitarfish!
