South African Fishing: Port Alfred River Estuary
Fishing In The Beautiful Coastal Town Of Port AlfredPort Alfred is a large coastal town on the Eastern Cape coast of South Africa. It is rich in history and has the third largest line fishing harbour in South Africa. There are so many great fishing spots and locations in Port Alfred (Which is half way between East London and Port Elizabeth) which include the Kowie River (Known for its great fishing and big Kob), the endless untouched beaches (Lots of Blue Sting Ray) and of course the famous piers and walls at the Kowie River mouth (Where big Musselcracker and Sharks can be caught). But in this article I am going to talk about an interesting freshwater lagoon/estuary in the middle of Port Alfred. It is located next to the news agents and opposite the main shopping centre in Port Alfred, you can't miss it... This beautiful place used to be a fun place to practice catch and release fishing but unfortunately now it is illegal to fish there as it is an important breeding ground. There are numerous freshwater fish and saltwater fish that are found in this estuary which is quite strange... The fish are absolutely wild here and almost any bait or lure will produce a bite. The Mullet in this estuary grow to particular large sizes and can be quite a handful when fighting them on light tackle. It is a pity that you are no longer allowed to fish here, but in the end it is probably a good thing as it will stop people killing the fish they catch in this breeding ground and it will also protect the fish from getting any injuries when they are caught. Fish Species That Occur In The Port Alfred EstuaryThere are a lot of fish that occur in the estuary and I am sure there are some other species that are not mentioned below... Blue Kurper, Freshwater Mullet, Striped Mullet, Blacktail, Grass Klipfish, Barracuda, Cape Moony, Southern Mullet (Harder), Pinky, Cape Stumpnose... The whole area is full of fish... Even though you can't catch any of them its worth just going to have a look at the size and number of the fish that live in this estuary... |
