The Sand Steenbras is a very little known South African saltwater fish species. It resembles a juvenile White Steenbras but a close inspection will reveal obvious differences. The Sand Steenbras can attain 55 centimeters but averages around 30 centimeters. The Sand Steenbras is also called a Marmora and can grow up to a size of almost 1 kilogram. This ocean species makes a very good live bait for fish such as Bronze Whalers, Ragged Tooth Sharks, Kob and Garrick (Leervis).
The Sand Steenbras prefers sandy estuaries, bays and beaches and is very good at camouflaging itself from its many predators. The Sand Steenbras feeds mainly upon molluscs, cracker shrimp and mole crabs. The juvenile Sand Steenbras often form large shoals in shallow water areas... The Sand Steenbras can provide many hours of fun for the angler, or many hours of misery as they are very quick to strip bait off your hook. They are quite feisty fish!
How To Catch The South African Sand Steenbras (Marmora)
The Sand Steenbras can be caught on light tackle, using quite a small hook. Mud prawn, marine worms, pink prawn, sardine, sand prawn, shrimp and small crabs will produce good results. For some reason the Sand Steenbras very rarely takes Chokka. If you want to keep the Sand Steenbras for live bait it is advisable to put them in a well aerated container and preferably try not to handle them. Enjoy catching these beautiful fish!
