All You Need To Know About The Zebra Fish

This South African fish gets it's name from the stripes it has on it's body which resemble a Zebra so it was named the Zebra Fish. The Zebra Fish is commonly caught by surf anglers and ski boat fisherman in gullies, rocky areas and offshore. The Zebra is also very easily speared by spear fisherman in the coastal shallows. The Zebra is commonly referred to as the Wildeperd in most parts of Southern Africa.

The Zebra Fish is easily distinguished from other saltwater fish species in South Africa and if you catch one you will definitely be able to identify it! This specimen can grow up to 50 centimeters long and the South African fishing (Angling) record is just of 6 kilograms. The Zebra has a wide distribution and range and it is found in shallow coastal water, estuaries and in the deep sea up to depths of 60 meters. It is an omnivorous fish and feeds upon various crustaceans and sea weeds. Although immature and juvenile fish are exclusively carnivorous. They have very sharp teeth. The Zebra is not normally found in shoals although during Spring they do form small schools for breeding purposes.

The Zebra is a beautiful fish and a feisty fighter when hooked. It is a great challenge to catch this specie on light tackle. To see my records of catching Zebra fish please follow the link. Pictures of the gorgeous Zebra Fish are below...
