Photos And Information About South Africa's Giant Stick Insect Bactrododema tiaratum
The Giant Stick Insect; A South African DelightThe Giant Stick Insect, as it's name suggests, is the largest Stick Insect in the South African region. The first 3 photographs of this very large insect is a female. You can tell this Giant Stick Insect is a female because of it's large size and because it lacks wings which the males of this species posses. Stick Insects are described as large, slow moving insects with long thin bodies and legs. The Giant Stick Insect, despite it's size can mimic almost any twig or leaf. The Giant Stick Insects Natural Habitat is shrubby areas with lots of trees and they do have a preference for warmer areas. They are attracted to lights at night which is how I got these first 3 amazing images. The photos were taken at Skukuza Rest Camp in the Kruger National Park, outside a bungalow.
