Butterflies are probably the most beautiful insects that occur in South Africa. There is a large amount of species of Butterfly and the Painted Lady is one of the more well known. This beautiful and fairly common insect is a reminder of the wealth of animal diversity that South Africa has to offer. Fully known as the Painted Lady Butterfly, it is often referred to as just the Painted Lady. This Butterfly is medium sized and has a wing span of about 45 mm. The Painted Lady is a quick flying insect and is found in most habitats in South Africa, although the Painted Lady Butterfly does favour the more dry and arid terrain. This insect has a wide distribution and is found all over South Africa. The first 2 pictures of this Painted Lady Butterfly were taken at a place called Millstream Farm, where I do quite a bit of research.
