The Fish Species Of Millstream Farm; Rainbow And Brown Trout
The Beautiful And Interesting Fish Of MillstreamThe Millstream Fish species are namely Brown Trout, Rainbow Trout and the occasional Golden Trout, which is an albino form of the Rainbow. However in my studies of the bodies of water on this highveld farm I have seen some tiny fish that look like Minnows and/or Kurper. These small fish have probably been washed down the freshwater streams or fish eggs have been brought in with rain. The easiest place to see these small fish are in the shallows of Lake Millstream and Wordsworth Waters. Rainbow and Brown Trout were introduced into South Africa a long time a go. They thrived in some of South Africa's colder places and now there are many wild feral Trout in streams all around the country. The difference between Rainbow and Brown Trout are as follows: Rainbow Trout are very colourful and spectacular and have a lilac-mauve pink band from head to tail whereas the Brown Trout have large red and brown spots on the body. In Millstream the Brown Trout are found in Lake Crystabel, Solitary Reaper and some are present in Lake Millstream. There are some very large Brown Trout on the farm and if you catch one you have to release it unless you have bought a Millstream permit to keep them. Rainbow Trout are found in all the weirs, lakes and dams on the farm and the average catch size is between 500g and 1kg. In the big lakes and dame you have a chance of catching 2-3,5kg Rainbow Trout. The Golden Trout are not very common and are only stocked (To my knowledge) in Lake Millstream and Solitary Reaper. Watch out for the Blue Kurper as they are starting to appear all over the place! The 2 main Trout species are a joy to catch in Millstream and it doesn't matter if it's a 250g Rainbow Trout or a 3kg Brown Trout the fights will be tremendous and it will be so pleasing when you catch the fish. Please remember Trout are living animals so limit your kill, don't kill your limit and practice catch and release fishing as much as possible, it's so much more rewarding. |
