The Astonishing Reptiles Of Millstream Farm

Millstream's Reptile Species

As the heading suggests the reptiles species that occur in Millstream are really astonishing. Many species occur on the farm and I have only discovered, of what I am sure, a small amount of all the reptiles that occur here. One of the best sightings I have ever had in Millstream was watching a Rock Monitor Lizard above Lake Christabel. This Monitor, was sun basking on the mountainous terrain known as Oribi Outcrops, it was a great sighting. Reptiles in Millstream are not often seen, although the Highveld grasslands and scattered koppies provide great habitat for them.

Besides the lizard species on the farm, snakes also occur. The 2 Skaapsteker snakes are the most common of these reptilian species. The Skaapstekers favour grassland areas, although they might be observed in the thicker vegetation on occasion. There are some amazing lizards in Millstream and they appear in all shapes and sizes. I have recorded 17 species of reptiles that occur in Millstream, but I have failed to identify many other lizards and snakes, so there are many more species than this!

  2. Mole Snake

  3. Common Brown Water Snake

  4. Rhombic Skaapsteker (Spotted Skaapsteker)

  5. Striped Skaapsteker
