The Different Sections And Parts Of Millstream Farm
Millstream SectionsThere were once a lot of very small sections in Millstream but I have made them into larger sections and there are now currently 4 sections on the farm/nature reserve. Each of the parts of the farm are all unique and have special features. Each of the habitats in these 4 sections of Millstream are different. The habitat and many other things will be described regarding the sections below... Section A: Golden PlainsThe Golden Plains section is a stretch of hilly grassland with tall lovely coloured bristle grass, thus the name: Golden Plains. The trophy trout fishing dam, Lake Crystabel, occurs in this section where Brown Trout are found and there is also a bird hide on Wordsworth Waters here. The Golden Plains Section is a good place to see raptors and ground birds. The Southern African Hedgehog, Oribi and Steenbok all occur in this section and this area is a good place to see Serval and Grey Rhebok. Just keep your eyes open when you walk around this section or when you are fishing here because it is a great section to see all sorts of Millstream wildlife. The Golden Plains Section covers the area from the entrance gate, all along the boundary to Solitary Reaper, Coleridge, Tintern and Wordsworth and then back along the main road which is the boundary between the sections. Section B: Weir's ViewThe Weir's View Section is a very 'busy' section where quite a lot of wildlife can be viewed. The section overlooks all the Weir's of the nature reserve and also has a picnic shelter (Which provides spectacular views of the farm) and a Grey Crowned Crane enclosure (Millstream are involved in a Crane breeding program). You can often see Mountain Reedbuck above the weirs and the Jameson's Red Rock Rabbit occur in the koppie known as Hyrax Hill in this section. When this section is not over-run by fisherman it is a good place to see all sorts large waterbirds, small water birds and waders. This section has the feel of a very wild place. Look out for the small water fall past the last weir (Just keep following the stream). Section C: Marshland VleiThe Marshland Vlei Section, as it's name suggests, is an area full of reed clumps, marshes and semi wetlands. This section is home to some of the waterbird and woodland bird species that are not often seen in large game reserves elsewhere in South Africa. This area is an excellent place to look for the Vlei Rat and the Greater Cane Rat which are both present in the thicket lying areas and marshes. Common Duiker, African Clawless Otter, Scrub Hare, Serval and Jackal species have also been sighted in this section. The largest body of water in Millstream is here. The 30 acre Lake Millstream, which is home to a lot of big Trout, is a lovely sight and the island on the lake is home to African Spoonbill, African Darter and various Egret species. Section D: UntamedThis is personally my favourite section on the farm, the Untamed Section. The section is predominantly grassland with rocky outcrops and ridges scattered all over, along with the occasional clump of trees too. I have named this area the Untamed Section because of the fact that this is the wildest place on the farm and is home to so many unusual animals. The birdlife is not prolific here, but look out for all the Francolin and other ground nesting bird species. The occasional Sparrowhawk or Kite may be seen as well. There are a lot of reptile species here that make their homes in the rocks scattered all over the Untamed Section. So many mammals may be seen here. Besides the herds of Blesbok, Springbok and Zebra, both Jackal species, Porcupine, Mongoose species, Serval, Caracal, Steenbok, Duiker and Mountain Reedbuck can be viewed, if you are lucky... |
