Millstream Farm, The Highveld Wildlife And Birding Haven.

What There Is To Know About Millstream Farm

Millstream is an elegant and scenic trout farm in the Mpumalanga province of South Africa. Millstream is just outside the town of Dullstroom and is also close to the towns of Machachadorp and Belfast. It is a highveld haven as I like to describe it and supports a fascinating variety of mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, plants and of course fish, namely the rainbow and brown trout.

I have been fascinated by nature and its biotic factors ever since I was a young boy and my love for nature is growing tremendously by the day. My parents were one of the first couples to invest in Millstream in the early 1990’s. I have loved the place ever since I was first dazzled when I laid eyes on it when I was only a few months old. Of course then I never knew what a trout or even a mammal was, and I never would have dreamed I would be producing this field guide of the wildlife and nature of Millstream years later.

My research for this guide started in January 2002 when I decided to look through the brochures and some of my fathers fishing and wildlife records kept between the 24th of May 1990 and the 23rd of June 1994. I discovered many things by reading the brochures and a log that targeted Millstream. Since February 2002 I have kept video, photographic and written research items. Every 3 months when we travel to Millstream, which is just 2 hours and 15 minutes from Johannesburg, I get up before the sunrise (regardless of the season or the weather) and go walking around the farm for anything between 2 and 4 hours. This is by far the best time to do your journey of discovery, and I have witnessed some great events during the early hours of the day. I would then go out after breakfast for another 2 or 3 hours. This time of day is less productive, but is the best time to see large herds of Blesbok and large amounts of common Highveld bird species. In the dying hours of sunset more walking was to be done, as this is the time the nocturnal animals come out. After a tiring day it would not stop there! After dinner had been eaten I would go around the farm in the dark and coolness of night. I would always have a torch and a spotlight ready in case a Jackal was heard, or the ever-present Scrub Hare dashed across the road. This routine would continue for most of our stay, and during all that I still managed to get some fishing in and talk to the manager and bailiff on the farm.

My knowledge of Millstream has come a long way since early January 2002 and I have walked on all the trails and gone off them to try and get closer to White Storks or Grey Rhebok. I know the 408 hectare property like the back of my hand and I have been so accustomed to it that I have even named sections of the farm and special landmarks, which can be seen later in this field guide. I now know as much about the nature aspect of Millstream as the owners and managers do.

Millstream Farm is really a wonderful place to spend a week or even 2 or 3 days. I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys nature, wildlife, fly-fishing or anyone who just loves being in the fresh air. It is a great place to see wildlife not often encountered in game reserves or national parks like the Common Platanna, Rock Dassie, a variety of insects and beautiful birds. So read with astonishment and anticipation as I guide you through, the one and only, Millstream Farm!
