The Smaller Fascinating Mammals Of Southern Africa

Small Mammals Of South Africa

The smaller mammals of South Africa are usually the most difficult to find and therefore the most difficult to observe. They have different habits to the large mammals, predators and ungulates. You can often find (when you look closely) evidence of these predominantly nocturnal and wary creatures.

There are a few smaller mammals you might be able to see on your journey around South Africa. They are Chacma (Also called the Savannah Baboon) Baboon, of which there are many in the Kruger National Park and Karoo areas, the Vervet (Also called Blue Monkey) Monkey, which you will often find in and around Addo Elephant National Park and the Kruger National Park and finally the always energetic Tree Squirrel which is in abundance in the Lowveld and Kruger National Park areas.

I will be listing the different types of small mammals most commonly seen in South Africa. They are as follows:

  • Southern African Hedgehog,
