Bird Watching And Birding In The Fynbos Rich Western Cape

Bird Watching Hotspots In The Western Cape

There are a lot of great birding areas in the Western Cape province in South Africa, so it was hard to choose 10 best spots. The spots I have chosen are not in any order and all of these bird watching areas produce some great bird sightings.

Paarl Bird Sanctuary

Paarl Bird Sanctuary is good for all-year bird watching as it has permanent bodies of water all the way through the year. Birding in the Paarl Bird Sanctuary is a good place to see numerous waterfowl and occasionally Flamingo's.

De Hoop Nature Reserve

De Hoop Nature Reserve boasts many rare species that you have a good chance of seeing. Bird Watching in the De Hoop Nature Reserve can produce birds such as the Denham's Bustard, Southern Tchagra, Knysna Woodpecker and the Agulhas Long-Billed Lark.

Bontebok National Park

Bontebok National Park is not only a good place to see rare mammals but a wonderful reserve to go birding in. The Bontebok National Park a Bird Watchers delight with the Tambourine Dove and Denham's Bustard on their bird list.

Karoo National Park

It is best to visit the acacia and Karoo scrub vegetated Karoo National Park in Spring. The Ludwig's Bustard and Black-Eared Sparrowlark are some of the specials present in the Karoo National Park.

Berg River Estuary

The Berg River Estuary is one of the rarity hotspots in the Western Cape. It is best to visit the Berg River Estuary in Summer, where lots of migratory waders are present as well as the Chestnut-Banded Plover.

The Wilderness National Park is situated close to Knysna and is a birding paradise! Birds like the Knysna Turaco, Narina Trogon and White-Starred Robin are present in the Wilderness National Park.

The Cape of Good Hope Nature Reserve is one of the most scenic Western Cape Nature Reserves. The Cape Of Good Hope Nature Reserve is a good place to look for the seabird species and endemic birds. The Black-Rumped Buttonquail is also present in the reserve.

Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens

Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens is a very good place (In Summer) to see some of South Africa's endemic bird species.

Vrolijkheid Nature Reserve

The Vrolijkheid Nature Reserve has a lot of Karoo-like vegetation and plants and it is good for arid species. The specials of the Vrolijkheid Nature Reserve are the African Rock Pipit and the Double-Banded Courser.
